What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a condition where the spinal canal, the bony tunnel that houses your spinal cord and nerves, narrows. This narrowing can compress the nerves, causing pain, numbness, weakness, and other symptoms. Spinal stenosis can occur in two main areas:

  • Cervical spine stenosis: This affects the neck and can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms, hands, and sometimes even balance problems. This can also cause back pain between the shoulder blades.

  • Lumbar spine stenosis: This affects the lower back and is the more common type. Symptoms often include pain, numbness, or weakness in the buttocks and legs, and can worsen with activity (like walking) and improve with rest.

Central Canal vs. Foraminal Stenosis

There are two main types of spinal stenosis based on where the narrowing occurs:

  • Central canal stenosis: This is where the narrowing affects the entire spinal canal, compressing the spinal cord itself. This is more common in cervical stenosis.

  • Foraminal stenosis: This type focuses on the smaller openings (foramina) on either side of the spinal canal where individual nerve roots exit. This is more common in lumbar stenosis and can cause radiating pain like sciatica. In more severe cases this can lead to lower leg pain with walking and can make walking severely difficult

Conservative Treatment Options for Spinal Stenosis

At Marks Chiropractic, we offer a range of personalized, drug-free treatments to manage spinal stenosis and improve your quality of life. These include:

  • Spinal manipulation: Gentle adjustments to the spine can help improve mobility, reduce nerve compression, and alleviate pain.

  • Class IV laser therapy: This advanced laser treatment reduces inflammation, promotes healing, and can help manage pain associated with cervical spine stenosis and lumbar spine stenosis.

  • Therapeutic exercise: Specific exercises tailored to your condition can strengthen core muscles, improve flexibility, and support the spine. Nerve glides and nerve flossing are common exercises we utilize in the clinic to help our patients find cervical spine stenosis relief and lumbar spine stenosis relief

  • Dry needling: This technique involves using thin needles to target trigger points in muscles, which can help ease muscle tension and pain associated with stenosis.
